  1. Many of the stock broking houses, such as Charles Stanley & Citi Quilter offer services that can help you, although I believe many of the others will as well. Shop around as you have significant choice for this.

Most UK brokers will trade US stocks. Most of them can be traded in London, maybe a tad expensive. Alternatively a London broker will trade through a US broker in London. Unfortunately this will cost two commissions, Then there is the problem of running the desk between 16.30 when we close and 21.00 when Wall street shuts. It is possible but only on "worthwhile" business.

There is no problem with US Tax, you must sign a W8BEN and there is no problem in a UK citizen buying US stocks. Uk brokers don't take on US citizens as clients because they would have to make onerous returns to the SEC which make it uneconomical.

  4. You cannot legally trade stocks in the US if you don't have a US SS# or taxpayer ID, though there are some mutual funds and other instruments that allow you to do so "inside" them, so the tax obligations can be taken care of.  The same is true of US investors wanting to invest in UK companies.

There ARE "Depository Receipts" in US companies available to UK investors.
