Question:

Being billed for non services?

I canceled my gym membership in April through the cooperate office. I was continuously billed May, June and July. When I called the cooperate office they always told me that they canceled it but again I would get billed. Finally in July I talked to the cooperate office and they told me because it's a franchise they can't do anything. I called the franchise and they said they would cancel it but they wouldn't reimburse me. Can they not give me a refund since I didn't use the service?

  1. If they cancelled it in the first place they have it in writing and shouldn't have charged you. That is illegal. There's no reason you have to pay this. You took the proper steps in cancelling. Is there a CEO you can talk to or something? Good luck, gyms are notorious for charging you after you cancel or when you cancel they actually don't do it. I've heard so many stories like this with all different companies and it's just not right.

  2. Well they can but it is not a good business practice.  You see the franchise is a separate business from the corporate office.  I would make a bunch of noise at both the corporate and franchise offices.  Go to the local press and my favorite is to start an e-mail campaign.  Both you and all of your friends send e-mails complaining to any address you can find associated with the company.
