  1. It is umpires discretion and also it can depend on where the play is. If it is close to the boundary line they tend to throw it up because as with some of their dodgy umpiring decisions they do not want a dodgy bounce and bounce it out of bounds, could you imagine the crowd and the commentators reactions, as well of the years and years of replaying it.

  2. It all depends, theres no rule saying the umpire must bounce it so sometimes when it's damp or wet he might throw it up.

  3. yea, it depends on wat thing was done. if players are fighting over the ball i think they bounce. if the ball goes out then they through it over their head.

  4. Regardless of what the rule stipulates, those blokes in orange, lime green, or bright yellow will still confuse you.

I don't think that because you are from NSW you need the rule explained to you.

Most of our umpires are from Victoria, WA & SA, & they need the entire rule book explained to them!

  5. As every one has said, it's up to the umps, where is 'afl umpire'.

knowing those little men in white, it would be an EGO thing, with those blokes. they probably ribb each other for throwing it up, you could imagine them all together, having their little jokes, only thing worse would be accountants sitting at a bar together, bunch of stiffs.

  6. Law 11.3.3

    Throwing up Football

The field Umpire may throw the football in the air:

    (a) where he or she is of the opinion that the conditions are unsuitable for bouncing but before doing so, shall advise the Players accordingly;

    or

    (b) if directed to do so by the Controlling Body.

In essence the umpire could say that the controlling body (AFL) has given them the discretion to throw the ball in the air.

    .

  7. there is no rule to dictate it however the result is always fairer (to both ruckmen) with a throw as a bounce won't go straight up ussually (face it the shape doesn't aid that) u will see more and more throwing in the future i predict

  8. ic your a swan supporter(like me), there is no real RULE that says the ump has to bounce the ball or throw it up, when conditions are bad it is recommended that the ball is thrown up, it is just a choice by the umpire!!!

  9. some times to keep the game flowing  e.g if there is a skuffle off the ball the umpire will throw it up quickly

  10. there are to many answers to win this 10 pts but i dont remember if there is a rule but sometimes when it rains they throw it up or the umpire sucks at bouncing maybe the ground might be not good enough idk

  11. No steadfast rule really, just his preference at the time I guess.

Why do the Umpires do/decide half of what they do is a mystery to me! Seriously, sometimes I wonder if I'm watching AFL or some other ball game (and not just when my team is playing!)

  12. The 'Instruction to Umpires' I think it was called was that they should bounce the ball for all breakdowns except if they believe the ground or ball were in a condition that would prevent an effective bounce.

I saw that years ago in the Canberra comp I played in.

Makes a big difference to the rucks and rovers for timing!
