  1. Take the initiative by introducing yourself instead of waiting for someone else to introduce you. This will make them feel more comfortable around you and that will make easy to strike up a conversation.

If you are meeting someone new through a mutual friend you could ask "so how do you know [mutual friend's name]". And since you have a mutual friend it is likely that you will have something in common with them and then the rest is history!

  2. i'd just try to be loud and weird, but in a good way, and don't be too shy or too scared to say anything

  3. Start asking them about their interests and hobbies.  That will make people warm up to you and they'll be doing most of the talking.

  4. Boredom is in the eye of the beholder.  To be interesting you have to have some sort of internal life that is your reference point.  Most people have some interesting things about their lives, listen to them and don't work so hard at trying to impress anyone.

  5. You can relax in the knowledge that people spend, on average,  98% of their time thinking about themselves.  This is GREAT news for anyone who frets about how they are being perceived...since, let's face it, we are all pretty irrelevant to the majority of people we come into contact with.

Now, let's assume you have some additional motive in mind, like making new friends...in that case, smile warmly, make good eye contact and listen very carefully to what people say and then ask follow-up questions to learn more about them.  It's also helpful to have some mastery of current movies/books/news, etc, to draw on in the event this comes up in discussion.

And if you're still quiet, that's OK...there's a cliche that I'm going to massacre but it goes something like "better to be quiet and thought a fool than to speak and remove all doubt"...not exactly applicable here, but the previous advice about being crazy to get attention is just plain criminal.
