  1. I was introduced to 'beer pong' as the game that is played with paddles and involves hitting cups and sinking the ball. Beirut is the weaker version that doesn't really involve anything having to do with 'pong' except that people sometimes play it on a ping pong table and use a ping pong ball.

Much later, while hanging out with some younger college kids (after I graduated) they introduced 'beirut' to me as 'beer pong'.  I don't think that there was any 'confusion' about the names of the games until recently.

Seems silly to me, but ....

Having attended 3 of the biggest 'party' schools on the West Coast, I might just have a qualified answer...heheheh.

  2. I went to college in Maine and there was a 50/50 split of Beirut (or just root) and beer pong.  A game called "beer die" was also rather popular and similar.  I'm from the Midwest (from Iowa, live in Ohio) though and almost everybody here calls it beer pong.

Personally I'm in the Beirut camp regardless of where I'm from or where I am.  The first poster may be full of c**p but in my mind I've always thought that Beirut was a more appropriate name along the same lines of his/her thinking.  Nothing ever really struck me as "pongy" about the game aside from the occasional use of a ping-pong table.

  3. Unfortunately for the previous poster, he is dead wrong. Beer pong does not involve paddles, it involves throwing a ball into cups. However, if he and his friends from Massachusetts want to call it something else I have no problem with it as long as he acknowledges that is is a regional difference. I'm from Jersey and go to college in Virginia.

  4. Beer Pong

    NY,NY

  5. beer pong all the way..and im from nyc

  6. Beer Pong has paddles, and you hit balls into cups.

Beirut does not have paddles. You throw balls into cups.

It's not a regional difference, that's the name of the game.

  7. Beer Pong, from CT (went to school in Boston and Texas)

  8. Although the game is called Beirut, it is often referred to as Beer Pong in many areas. It has been agreed among most people that calling the game Beirut or Beer Pong is acceptable and can be used interchangeably when referring to the game. Tendencies show that more people from the north refer to it as Beirut and more people from the south refer to it either as Beirut or Beer Pong. Simply it is argued that 'Beer Pong' is easier to remember and makes more sense to the novice player. But most serious players call it 'Beirut'.

  9. Beer Pong!!!

beer pong does NOT require paddles... that first person is WRONG!  haha...

I went to Penn State and lived in PA during my college years, now i live in NJ and people here still call it beer pong.
