Beiwen Zhang upsets Anastasia Prokopenko in Women’s Singles quarter-final at US Open GP Gold
Singapore’s budding shuttler Beiwen Zhang surprised everyone by creating the biggest upset of the day when she defeated the fourth seeded Anastasia Prokopenko of Russia in Women’s Singles quarter-final at the Yonex OCBC US Open GP Gold 2012 at Los Angeles, USA, on Thursday, July 5.
Un-seeded Beiwen showed up a staggering performance when she played on a different level while playing against her higher ranked Russian rival and registered a stunning victory with a huge margin.
Lower ranked Beiwen played aggressive badminton with impressive confidence as she had nothing to lose against her fourth seeded Russian opponent and thrashed her in straight sets by taking just 29 minutes.
Higher ranked Prokopenko, on the other hand, did not expect such a killing treatment from her un-seeded Singaporean challenger and knelt down to her in two sets with a humiliating margin on the score board.
In the first game, Beiwen started her run in a tremendous manner as she created an immense pressure on her higher ranked challenger from opening rallies and established a smashing lead of 11-3 until the one-minute interval.
After the break, the Singaporean shuttler continued her surprising performance in front of local crowd and did not let her opponent to reduce the deficit on the score board.
Beiwen remained in impressive position throughout the opening game of this quarter-final clash and took advantage by grabbing the first game with a stunning 21-8 score on the board.
Stung by the loss of opening game, Prokopenko tried to employ her fireworks in opening rallies of second game but failed to pull out any considerable advantage as her lower ranked opponent remained close until 7-7.
At this stage, Beiwen showed her brilliance again and set up a four-point lead of 11-7 until the end of opening part.
After the break, Beiwen remained consistent in the game as she did not lose her focus and also avoided unforced errors in the entire concluding phase.
The Singaporean was flawless on court and she easily grabbed the second game with a huge score of 21-9.
Beiwen sent her Russian rival packing in Women’s Singles quarter-final with a one-sided 21-8 and 21-9 margin on the score board.
