Question:

Belfast Lost and Found Post Office

I need to get in touch with the Belfast Lost and Found branch of the Post office as my flatmate told the postie I didn't live here and so it got sent there as there was no senders address on it.

I was wondering if anyone has ever done this, how and what was your success at getting your package back?

Thanks :D

  1. "All undeliverable stamped mail without an external return address is sent to the National Returns Centre in Belfast.  The process is to open the mail, check the contents, and identify which items do not reveal a return address.  In these cases, the item will be stored for up to 12 months, pending a customer claim.  The length of time that the item is stored depends on the product used, or whether the item has significant personal or intrinsic value.  If there is no claim after this period, the items are disposed of (destroyed, recycled, sold at auction).  The remaining items with a return address will be returned to the sender and if the item has a surcharge levied, then the surcharge will be levied to the sender."

That is from the Royal Mail website.

If all your mail was taken back, you'll find that all of the mail with a returns address will actually be on its way back to the senders. Its only mail without a return address that is sent to Belfast NRC, where they will go to lengths to have it sent back to the sender before doing anything else.

I recommend that you, first and foremost, telephone your local delivery office (it will have an area code matching yours, NOT an 08 number) and inform them that your mail may have mistakenly been redirected. This should prevent it from happening again. After that, telephone Royal Mail customer services asking for details about claiming any mail at NRC in Belfast. The number is 08457 740740. I do think its more than likely that contacting them will not be of any use until they contact you telling you they have found your mail. If they manage that, of course, its more likely that they'll assume you are no longer at that address (as they will act on the information given) and return to sender.
