Much of this I knew before as I am Irish, but the most interesting fact I found now was that Belfast's name (in Irish Beal Feirste) means 'mouth of the sandbank'  of the  River Farset, which nowadays runs underground beneath the High Street  -  and so is no longer to be seen at all.
