Belgian Nicolas Colsaerts wins the Volvo China Open by four shots – Golf news
Belgian golfer Nicolas Colsaerts posted a final round 66 to win the Volvo China Open by four shots on Sunday.
Colsaerts finished with an amazing 24 under par overall to relish success at the Luxehills International Country Club. The player has now become only the second Belgian golfer to win on the European Tour. For Colsaerts, who has been playing professional
golf for the past 10 years, it was a well-deserved victory.
Colsaerts was actually the second youngest Challenge Tour graduate ever and had to see tough times in the past decade. Since 2010 however, the Belgian has been improving in both his stats and money list ranking.
In China this weekend, Colsaerts really showed the world what an amazing player he is. The last Belgian to win on the European Tour was Philippe Toussaint in 1973. Colsaerts said that all the kids back home were surely looking up to his victory. Talking
about Toussaint, Colsaerts said that he knew him very well and he must be happy.
“I'm enjoying every second of it,” said Colsaerts. “I'm dizzy - my head is going all over the place. I've been waiting for this for a very long time and I think I did it in the best of manners so I'm really delighted. A lot of people were expecting big things
of me and for me to win tournaments a long time before.”
The player started the Tour only 18 years of age and actually lost his Tour card once. With 2008 being the worst year in Colsaerts’ career, he is getting back on track now. The 28-year-old did not let nerves get to him in the final round of the tournament.
He started off well birdying the first, third and seventh holes. The only early rival for him was the Spanish Martin who made ten birdies in the final round. Colsaerts did not really give into intimidation, and made three more birdies on the 12th,
14th and 15th holes.
New Zealand’s Danny Lee, Irish Peter Lawrie, Pablo Martin and Dane Soren Kjeldsen all finished in second place with twenty under par overall.
