Belgian Niels Albert wins Cyclo-cross race at Vlaamse Industrieprijs Bosduin 2011
BKCP Powerplus team’s Niels Albert put in a tremendous performance in the C1 Cyclo-cross race in Kalmthout at Vlaamse Industrieprijs Bosduin 2011 on Sunday, October 2.
In the final lap, Neils built a huge gap in the final kilometres and took a total of 1 hour, 2 minutes and 50 seconds. The Belgian professional cyclists overcame a slow start by increasing his pace and chased the large group of cyclists in the opening laps.
Several cyclists worked hard and launched attacks including, Klaas Vantornout (Sunweb-Revor) and Francis Mourey (FDJ).
Nevertheless, Mourey opened the door for the Belgian, who took an advantage of 15 seconds in the last two laps. Due to this, no one was able to catch him. He managed to put in a brilliant performance during the race and keep everyone behind him to struggle
throughout.
After winning the stage, Albert said, “It was hard to get away. I tried several times, but took my chance when Mourey fell. I immediately had a big gap.”
In the first lap, Wellens took a lead with Albert and Nys. The trio pulled away from the three cyclists including, Vantornout, Mourey and Vincent Baestaens (Landbouwkrediet). Albert attacked and got away as Wellens became the only cyclist to chase him. He
continued his brilliant effort throughout the stage under the sunny skies and warm weather grabbing the runner-up spot with 13 seconds down to the Belgian.
Wellens said, "I was really surprised I had good legs. I could ride without stress and the holeshot was beautiful. I was a little too far back when Niels accelerated and I could not close the gap."
Tom Meeusen of Telenet-Fidea Cycling also maintained his pace in the gusty sprint and secured third spot with the difference of 22 seconds ahead of Francis Mourey (FDJ). Sven Nys (Landbouwkrediet) was in sixth place behind team-mate Vincent Baestaens (Landbouwkrediet).
The four cyclists Radomir Simunek Jr. (BKCP-Powerplus), Kevin Cant (Van Goethem/Prorace CT), Rob Peeters (Telenet-Fidea Cycling Team) and Dries Pauwels (Van Goethem/Prorace CT) were disqualified.
