Belgian rider’s Niels Albert of BKCP-Powerplus was hit by a car while training - Cycling News
Belgian Cyclo-cross Champion, Niels Albert of BKCP-Powerplus faced a bad crash while training. Recently, BKCP-Powerplus Team reported that Albert was hit by a car and his wrist bone was broken.
For the next few weeks, the 25-year-old Cyclo-cross racing cyclist will go behind the scenes but he hopes to return to cycling in a strong form.
According to his team, the Belgium has broken the trapezium bone in his left hand and will have to wear a cast for at least two weeks.
Recently, he took the Superprestige series after winning the two rounds in Ruddervoorde and Zondoven.
In the first round, Albert rode extremely well and took a total of 1 hour, 1 minute and 44 seconds, beating Bart Aernouts (Rabobank-Giant Off-Road Team) and Klaas Vantornout (Sunweb-Revor).
In the second round, the Belgian national champion bounced back from a disappointing World Cup trip in the Czech Republic to take hold of the victory, with a timing of 58 minutes and 30 seconds and beat Sven Nys and Kevin Pauwels.
Two days ago, Albert took part in Hamme-Zogge and grabbed the fourth place. He started his professional career in 2001 and took the U17 Cyclo-Cross Championship. He also won the U19 Cyclo-cross Championship in 2003-2004.
On October 8, 2006, he secured his first major victory at Grote Prijs Pro-cycling Neerpelt. Albert grabbed the European title after winning the U23 Cyclo-cross Championship and snatched the third place in World U23 Championships.
He continued his efforts and gained a lead in the next World Championships by grabbing the runner-up’s spot.
In the 2008-2009 seasons, the Belgium displayed a good performance and claimed the second place in the Belgium Championships.
He bagged a major victory in the Superprestige races again and won both the rounds, Hoogstraten and Gavere. He also won the Gazet van Antwerpen Trophy.
In the 2010-2011 seasons, Albert retained his Gazet van Antwerpen Trophy in Azencross. He put up a tremendous performance in the Belgian Cyclo-cross Championship and grabbed his first tri-colour jersey and a gold medal from Patrick McQuaid, President of the International Cycling Union in Antwerp on January 9.
He is to appear in the Asper-Gavere and Gieten rounds, that are scheduled to start in the next 12 days and there is a widespread concern that the injury could become a hindrance in Niels Albert’s way to win the series.
