Belgium beats Team GB by 1-3 in match 1 of three-match test series – Volleyball news
The Edinburgh University Pleasance Sports Complex, held a match on June 12, 2012 between the Olympic teams of Great Britain and Belgium.
The match was the start of a test series that consists of a total of three matches. The opening match of the series took four sets to reach its close and gave the victory to the Belgian side.
The Belgian men’s volleyball team played in a dominating fashion throughout the match. It was only in the second set that Team GB was able to pull off a win, otherwise, they remained struggling which showed in the final set scores: 25-19, 22-25, 25-15, and
25-19.
The coach of Team GB Harry Brokking, expressed his disappointment at the outcome of the match in the following manner, “We were not consistent and we lacked a bit of concentration on serve reception and we weren’t positive enough on service. Belgium kept
their level consistently high and punished us. But I’m happy with what I've seen and the performance of some of the players...There are a lot of positives to see and we need to find our consistency, mostly in serving, and keeping up the sharpness and concentration.”
The downfall of the Team GB was the fact that their play was not consistent which hindered them from putting in a well coordinated effort and giving their rivals a significant challenge. Other than that, Team GB also gave 22 points away due to service errors.
Belgium was able to take the lead in the opening set at 8-6 but Team GB got the score level at 9-9 and managed to pull up ahead at 16-13. Belgium rallied together and scored the next four points and sped on to secure the opening frame at 25-19.
The loss of the first set did not sit well with the Team GB and they mustered up their strength to put in a commendable effort that eventually got them the second frame at 25-22. However, the consistency of Belgium and their superior play led them to beg
the next two sets of the match with ease at 25-15 and 25-19 respectively.
