Belgium overcomes Poland by 3-1 in pool play of FIVB Volleyball Women’s Junior World Championship
The two top scorers of the FIVB Volleyball Women’s Junior World Championship, Lise Van Hecke of Belgium and Poland's Zuzanna Czyznielewska, met on  centre court on Sunday, July 24th in Trujillo, Peru. By the time that the thrilling four set match
reached its end, the Belgium side had won the Pool C match, helped by 40 points from Hecke as opposed to the 27 of Czyznielewska.
The final set scores at the end of the match stood at the following points: 20-25, 25-21, 26-24 and 25-16.
The first set of the match saw the Polish squad keep the lead for most part of game time as Belgium tried to settle into the match. After losing the opening set of the game, Belgium was able to play the second set with renewed energy and seal a win. Poland
gave an intense fight in the third set but lost in the end. The fourth set proved to be the final one as the Belgium team made a short story of it by capping it with a win.
The Belgium Coach, Julien Van De Vyver, made the following comments at the press conference after the match had ended: “I’m very proud of my team, they are an united team, healthy team, a strong team and they gave their best on the blocks and the spiking.
We build our team in a short period, we were worried about that, now we are confident, but we won’t let that blind our path to winning the next match against such a strong team as Korea is.”
Poland took the lead early on in the first set and stuck with it for the most part. Belgium kept trying to overtake their opponents but the Polish attackers proved to be too fierce for the struggling Belgium squad. As a result, it was only a matter of time
that Poland was able to secure the first set of the game at 25-20.
The second set saw a push and pull between Belgium and Poland as each team snatched the lead from the other. When the set reached the middle stages, Belgium emerged as the dominant team. Adding to that, the 12 opponent errors that the Polish committed made
the perfect recipe for a win for the Belgium team at 25-21.
Feeding off the confidence generated by winning the second set got the Belgium team to perform strongly in the third set and take the lead at 7-2. Later on Poland reached a match tie at 23-23 but Belgium ended the set on their terms at 26-24.
Soaring high with two sets under their belt, the Belgium team was almost unstoppable in the fourth and won by 25-16.
Belgium will find itself in Lima to start the second round of the tournament soon.
