Belgium’s Luca Brecel hits televised stage of 2012 World Snooker Championship – Snooker News
After putting up an excellent snooker display in the qualifying session of the 2012 World Snooker Championship at the World Snooker Academy in Sheffield, Belgium’s Luca Brecel has made his way successfully into the opening round of the mega event where he
will be playing along with the top dogs of snooker. The youngster is quite happy after making his debut at the Crucible Theatre in Sheffield.
Surging into the televised stages of the mega event, Brecel has become the youngest potter ever to play in the World Snooker Championship. He is just 17-year-old and played like a mature player during his run in the qualifying session. He began his run beating
Ian McCulloch by the score line of 10-2. After that he defeated Barry Pinches by 10-3, Michael Holt 10-9 and Mark King by 10-8.
The young Belgian will break the record of the youngest potter ever to play at the Crucible. Before him, the former seven-time World Snooker Champion, Stephen Hendry held the record of the youngest Crucible qualifier when he entered the arena at the age
of 17 years and three months. The young cueman is feeling good after making it to the mega event.
Speaking to World Snooker, Brecel said, “The bigger the occasion the better I handle it. I don't mind who I play, I'm not afraid of anyone. It feels fantastic. I knew if I qualified I would be the youngest ever. No one can criticise me now. Since I started
playing snooker I wanted to be World Champion.”
He added, “I want to thank my parents (Carlo and Mirella) for what they have done for me, as well as my coach Chris for the help he has given me on the mental side. Everyone in Belgium is following me, they will be going crazy now.”
Playing at the baize under Crucible ceiling will be a new and exciting experience for the young potter as he will be on cue alongside the veteran Stephen Hendry, John Higgins, Ronnie O’Sullivan and Judd Trump. Brecel’s father told the media that they had
big screens up in the local snooker clubs in Belgium to watch the final qualifier via World Snooker’s live stream.
