Belgium’s Luca Brecel hopes for better run next season: 2012 World Snooker Championship
Snooker fans present at the Crucible Theatre in Sheffield witnessed another easy game between the debutant Belgian potter, Luca Brecel and the Scotsman Stephen Maguire in the first round of the 2012 World Snooker Championship. The match up was expected to
be a close encounter because Brecel displayed great snooker skills in the qualifying session and was confident.
The young Brecel had a blast in the Championship’s qualifying session and defeated four major professionals during his qualifier campaign to book his place in the first round. He started his run with his first qualifier against England’s Ian McCulloch and
defeated him by the score line of 10-2.
After that he continued his winning streak and hit three more wins beating England’s Barry Pinches by 10-3, Michael Holt by 10-9 and Mark King 10-8. The critics appreciated the way he finished the qualifier proceedings and the way he started his debut at
the Crucible Theatre.
Brecel was hoping for a positive beginning in the Championship and has all eyes on his goal while he was playing against Maguire. He did not let his opponent take the game easy and pushed him under pressure with the first frame win.
However, in the later part of the game, Maguire dominated with his classy game play and defeated Brecel. The young Belgian now hopes for a better campaign in the next season and is aiming to come back to Crucible again. He speaks Flemish so his remarks were
translated by his coach Chris Henry.
Brecel said to World Snooker, “I didn't play my best, unfortunately. Until next year! I think if I had won the second frame today it might have been a different match. I just didn't play the same way as I did in the qualifiers. I found the crowd very enthusiastic
and I enjoyed it.”
The 17-year-old added, “I find the Crucible really special, it's different from anywhere else I've played. I didn't find playing in front of the cameras a problem. I can play so much better, but hopefully next year will be a different story. I got a lot
of confidence from the qualifiers.”
Meanwhile, playing in the 2012 World Snooker Championship, Brecel became the youngest potter to play in the mega event. He broke the record of former seven-time World Snooker Champion, Scotland’s Stephen Hendry.
