Believe You Can for Rachel Alexandra and Mr. Bowling for Risen Star, after their victories on the same card for trainer Larry Jones
Trainer Larry Jones seems to have done all the hard work by saddling two winners of the same owner at New Orleans, and no wonder he was all smiles at Fair Grounds during training hours on 22 January, 2012.
The Kentucky Governor, Brereton Jones owned 3-year-old filly, Believe You Can, started off the celebrations when she nabbed the $125,000 Silverbulletday Stakes at Fair Grounds at about 1 mile & 70 yards on dirt.
She had been massively stretched in distance after dwelling in 5 to 6 furlong's sprints during her two maiden special weight attempts, an allowance race and a graded stakes sprint, but got stretched out to a mile to participate in the Grade 2 Pocahontas.
The Kentucky bred daughter of Proud Citizen, out of mare El Fasto by El Prado, Believe You Can on 21 January, 2012, ran a great race to down the likes of Summer Applause in second, and Inny Minnie in third, while going for the first time at about 1 mile & 70 yards, she clocked a time of 1 minute and 42.34 seconds.
On the same card Larry Jones sent out Brereton Jones owned, Mr. Bowling, to run in the Grade 3 Lecomte Stakes at Fair Grounds Race Course.
Over a distance of 1 mile 70 yards, Larry Jones was successful yet again, saddling Mr. Bowling to register a tenacious head victory over the rampant, Z Dager, and Shared Property, who finished third by a mere half length to the runner up, Z Dager.
“Yesterday was a good day, that’s for sure,” said Jones Sunday – as always a master of the understatement.
“The Governor was also very happy about the whole thing. He couldn’t make it down here yesterday, but I’ve probably talked to him more on the phone yesterday and again this morning more than we have in a long time. He’s still very excited about how things went yesterday”
Now the Jones runners are early favourites for the Grade 2 Louisiana Derby on 1 April, 2012, and its feminine counterpart, but before that Mr. Bowling will take on the Grade 2 Risen Star field and on the same card, Believe You Can, will try to extend her winning streak in the Grade 3 Rachel Alexandra Stakes.
