Believe You Can set a muddy track ablaze after her Kentucky Oaks work
Despite losing a contender in the Grade 1, $2million Kentucky Derby at Churchill Downs on 5 May, 2012, in the shape of, Mark Valeski, Brereton C. Jones and trainer Larry Jones still have a Grade 1, $1 million Kentucky Oaks starter in Believe You Can, who is far more accomplished than his stable mate.
The 3-year-old filly is owned by Brereton C. Jones, who homebred the filly, is exiting a special win at the right time in the Grade 2 Fair Grounds Oaks on 31 March, 2012, at about 1 1/16 miles.
The Kentucky bred Proud Citizen filly, Believe You Can on 29 April, 2012, worked over a muddy track at Churchill Downs, and was still able to fire a bullet five furlongs in a time of 58 2/5 seconds.
The 3-year-old filly completed her preparations for the 4 May, 2012, Kentucky Oaks, and closed it out with a brilliant work which will keep the connections hopes high till race day.
The work turned in by, Believe You Can, was a special one indeed, as she managed to outrun the early favourite for the Kentucky Derby, Bodemeister, who drilled five furlongs on the same day, but Believe You Can turned in the same distance 1 2/5 seconds faster than Bodemeister, becoming the fastest out of 10 over the same distance.
“We don’t think that’s too fast,” said Brereton Jones, who was on hand at Churchill Downs. “She did it easily and wasn’t being pushed at all.”
“She is committed to being a race horse. She has a pretty good mind and doesn’t get the least bit squirrely. And she’s got a wonderful way of travelling. That’s a very good combination. And she’s in the hands of a very good trainer. So it all fits together,” said trainer Larry Jones.
The Kentucky bred filly is out of El Prado mare El Fasto, and she has been impressive this current campaign, bagging two out of three starts.
She kicked off proceedings as a 3-year-old with win in the Silverbulletday Stakes at about 1 mile and 70 Yards at Fair Grounds Race Course, where she raced the rest of her two starts.
