Belinda Hocking impresses in Women’s 100m backstroke heats – EnergyAustralia Swimming Championships
Belinda Hocking of Albury impressed the aquatic crowd by dominating the preliminary rounds of Women’s 100m backstroke on day two of the 2012 EnergyAustralia Swimming Championships at the South Australia Aquatic and Leisure Centre in Adelaide on Friday, March 16.
The 21-year-old Hocking served notice of her talent by claiming first position in the qualifying rounds of 100m discipline with the timing of 59.89 seconds. With her tremendous effort, Hocking stayed 1.01 seconds ahead of Nudgee Brothers’ Emily Seebohm, who clocked a timing of 1 minute and 00.90 seconds.
She was followed by Meagen Nay of St Peters Western Swim Club, who stayed almost one second slower from her former finisher and posted an effort of 1 minute and 01.79 seconds. The 23-year-old Nay was chased by Sophie Edington of Melbourne, who earned fourth qualifying position of the discipline by posting a time of 1 minute and 02.18 seconds.
Nay’s teammate, Madison Wilson seized fifth finest spot of the race as she ended her swim in a time of 1 minute and 02.40 seconds.
In the meantime, St Peters Western Swim Club’s Ryan Napoleon conquered top finish in the Men’s 200m freestyle by posting an effort of 1 minute and 48.27 seconds. With his impressive pace, he enjoyed an advantage of 0.30 seconds over Kyle Richardson of Chandler, who submitted a time of 1 minute and 48.57 seconds.
The 24-year-old Richardson was trailed by Napoleon’s team-member, Kenrick Monk, who occupied third finest spot of the event with the timing of 1 minute and 48.72 seconds. Similarly, Cameron McEvoy proved his audacity for the fourth fastest spot of the event, as he remained 0.17 seconds behind and hit the finishing wall with the timing of 1 minute and 48.89 seconds.
McEvoy was traced by David McKeon of Wests Illawarra, who occupied fifth position of the event with the timing of 1 minute and 49.16 seconds.
The session completed after the conclusion of all planned events while Hocking and Napoleon expressed their desire of achieving the same in their respective semi-finals. In addition, the championship will conclude on March 22 after the finalisation of Australian team to the 2012 London Olympic Games.
