  1. You're right, the hotels in Belize City are awful, especially the Princess.  The Princess has been known to grossly overcharge guest credit cards, mine being one of them.

I try not to stay in Belize City unless I have an early morning flight.  If you must stay in Belize City, stay at the Fort George Radisson.  It is more expensive but it is by far the best, and most trustworthy, hotel in Belize City.

If your options are open, you really should stay out on one of the cayes.  I prefer Caye Caulker because it is less expensive and there are not as many tourists.  Or you should head inland and check out Caves Branch, Mountain Pine Ridge, and the rest of the Cayo district.

  2. If money is no object and you are looking for peace of mind, I would stay at Fort George. Also, there is a Best Western just on the outskirts of the city. Being a native of Belize, these would be my choices, but I would rather stay at the Cayes, namely San Pedro or Caye Caulker. It will cost a little bit more, but it will definitely be safer.

  3. Princess Hotel and Casino. The hotel is nice and well taken care of. There is a soccer stadium right across the street and a bar with good music within walking distance. I stayed there for 2 nights before returning home. Paid about $95 US a night.  I'm not sure why, but after walking back to the hotel after a dance at the bar, there were armed guards out front of the hotel.  Hotel security I guess......I will stay there again.
