Question:

Belize: food and language?

I'm going to Belize for a class for a few weeks, and I'm a vegetarian (lacto-ovo). Is it possible/reasonable to avoid eating meat there, or would it be less of a hassle if I just ate meat for the few weeks I was there?

Also. I don't speak Spanish. I know that English is the 'official' language, but I was wondering how commonly it was used in relation to Spanish or indigenous languages.

  1. Second much of what the previous person has mentioned.  It is possible to be a vegetarian here but since there is less choice in terms of where and what to eat it is harder then it is in the States.  Also, thank God, English is the language of the country and you can do fine almost everywhere in the country with that language.  However, in the western part of Belize a large number of people are Spanish speakers but even then most people can understand at least a little bit of English.

Take care and hope that you have a great time in Belize.

By the way, if you want to know the basics of what Belize is like just look at the Belize portion of the CIA website - link below.

  2. It is not difficult at all to avoid meat.Tons of tropical fruit and fresh vegetables as well as rice.Spanish is hardly spoken in Belize. The indigenous people living there speak Maya or Gaifuna.English really is the language of most people.I have lived and worked there so if you have any other questions email me and I will try to answer them.I hope you have a great experience ...lots to see and do.
