Question:

Belkin Encryption?

Can anybody explain to me how to encrypt my wireless so that only the PC it's connected to, two laptops and my PS3 and Wii can access it?

I've read the manual and couldn't do it. I ended up locking out the laptops and the games consoles couldn't connect to the internet. Any chance anyone can give me a quick step by step of how to encrypt the router so only my PC, two laptops and the two games consoles can use it.

If anyone can help I'd rate you higher than Allah, Budda, Jesus, or whichever one it is you support.

Regards.

  1. Sorry, can't give you a step by step guide, that would fill a small book but I can guess where it all went wrong :-) Once you set up the encryption on the belkin wireless, you then have to do the same thing on all the other wireless devices.

Start on the PC and use it to talk to the belkin box and set up WPA/PSK encryption and type in a pass phrase, I can't remember how long this can be but long is good.

Assuming you have Windows:- On the laptops look for the wireless network icon in your system tray (bottom right of screen). If its not there go to control panel/network. Run the wireless network setup. Look for the security settings. Set the security to WPA (vista calls this wpa personal) and enter the passphrase.  Close/apply the settings dialogs and give it a few seconds. Theoretically it should connect you to the wireless network.

Repeat on the WII and PS3.

I hope this helps. I've had to do this a couple of times and its very tedious but you have to be methodical and set up each machine one at a time.

  2. To set this you should connect by cable. Log into the router through the web browser as described in the manual. Got to wireless security and select the type of encryption. I advise using WEP 128 bit, it is not as secure as WPA, but maby game sconsoles can not use WPA. Enter the key as 26 hexadecimal digits (numbers 0 to 9 and letters A to F).

Once this is done, save your settings, unplug the cable and use the wireless card's search program to find your router, then set the same code (always keep a note of this) and connect. This is all you need to do, do not get into anything else, as this can cause more problems later. If you get ti wrong you only need to connect one machine by cable to rectify the problem. If you have one wired machine you can use this, and do not need to disconnect the cable.

  3. Your computer dosnt have a static ip address because your ISP changes it for secure reasons, your ps3 has a static ip

Goto your routers ip address > set-up tab and make sure its set DHCP not static ip.
