  1. How shortly after takeoff? Once the plane is cruising, a bell sounds when the pilot turns off the "fasten seat belt" light. This allows everyone to get up if they need to.

That sound is basically just there to alert passengers that something has changed. Rather important if they need to get seated and strapped in quickly. That's the only bell sound I can think of, unless you're seated near an attendant station, then you might be hearing someone ringing the call bell for a flight attendant.

  2. I think the one you refer to comes from the good old days of smoking in the airplanes.  The bell used to chime right after takeoff and the non smoking would shut off.  Even brand new airplanes still have the non smoking sign next to the fasten seat belt signs...

  3. For us, one bell just after takeoff means that we are passing 10,000 ft.  The flight attendants can now make their PA that it is OK to turn on your electronic devices.  In the descent, one bell means we have just passed 10,000 ft.  The FA's now make their PA to secure the cabin for arrival.  You know seat backs and tray tables to their full up and lock position.  Turn off all electronic devices etc.

Two bells is a signal for the FA's to call the cockpit. Their is also a bell everytime the seat belt sign is turned off/on as an attention getter.

Hope that clears up the mystery.

  4. There is no bell but a horn prior take-off/landing and that is to warn crew that they are about to T/O or LDG but but are not in the configuration to do so( let us say flaps still retracted). or in case of landing gears not down yet. but there is no bell.

Usually after take-off (am flt mechanic & when crew are smoking, I sit there), the only bell that ring is when the crew ask for their meals if the're hungry because usually the pax first but if they're hungry or just  ask coffee first will do.

  5. If its just one bell chime its just the cabin crew message system that chimes for various messages, seatbelt etc. If its a continuous rapid bell clanging like a telephone ringing nonstop and coming from the cockpit it can only be one thing. Engine fire warning.
