Bellarmine boys volleyball team defeats Saint Francis Mountain View
The Bellarmine boys volleyball team was able to defeat Saint Francis Mountain View on Saturday by 3-1.
The match in which the two teams contested each other was the semi-final of the Central Coast Section Division I boys volleyball.
The match between the two teams went on to four thrilling sets but the number one ranked Bellarmine team was able to get itself the ticket to the finals. By the time that Bellarmine had started celebrating its well deserved win by giving hoots of joy and
Mountain View was heading out of the courts cradling their disappointment, the scoreboard read as 17-25, 25-20, 27-25 and 25-12.
With their recent win, Bellarmine has been able to tally a total of 34 victories and 7 losses in the season so far.
As soon as the first set of the game started, the Lancers were able to take the lead for themselves. An early lead got Bellarmine under pressure from the start. Once the Lancers had the lead for themselves, they did not let their advantage go away. The Lancers
kept on extending their advantage until they had reached the final stages of the set.
All this time, Bellarmine kept trailing behind, without being able to close in the gap significantly. As a result, the Lancers were able to bag the first set of the game at 25-17.
The loss of the first set of the game by such a margin sent a much-needed wakeup call to Bellarmine. They were able to step up their play and come out strong in the second set of the match. The increased challenge provided Bellarmine made the Lancers work
harder. However, the Lancers failed to secure a win in the second set as Bellarmine took it at 25-20.
Capitalising on the momentum built by winning the second set of the game, Bellarmine was able to take an early lead in the third set at 6-0. Despite being at a deficit, the Lancers were able to close in the gap at 9-7. Not only did the Lancers come up close,
they were able to tie the score at 10-10. After an intense third set, the team that finally bagged it at 27-25 was Bellarmine.
After losing the third set of the game, the Lancers lost all heart and gave up the fourth set at 12-25.
“Winning Game 3 was huge,” Bellarmine coach Scott Petersen said. “St. Francis made a push and caught us in our worst rotation. They had one of their better servers matched up perfectly for them. We didn't have our best passing in Game 1, but our kids are
mentally strong. Our serving was on, for the most part.”
