Belle Vue favourites start off poorly Wednesday afternoon
The early races at Belle Vue Wednesday afternoon resulted in disappointing finishes as the race favourite of the first race of the day finished dead last, with the joint favourites in the second race of the day finishing fourth and last.
First up was an A3 race over 470m. Baltylum Droopy was the race favourite with 11-4 odds, but checked after the third bend and dropped to last place. He finished a long 5 ¼ lengths behind fifth place Romeo Brave. Bay City Rex had no trouble winning the race with Droopy out of the picture, taking the lead after the third bend, and winning over Freckleton by 3 lengths in a time of 28.44. Coming in behind Freckleton was Latest Dream, who ran well early, and led the pack after the first bend before Rex took over. Noirs Cookie passed the finish line another ¾ lengths behind Dream to take fourth place.
It was a close finish in the second race of the day with Black Diane taking the A9 rated matchup by ¾ lengths over Baltylum Balloon. Balloon had a slim lead over Diane and Move Over Hue for the bulk of the race until Diane made her move in the final stretch to steal the victory. Move Over Hue never got the chance to put himself in the lead but finished third, a 1/3 length behind Ballon.
Carneys Racer, one of the 3-1 joint favourites, stumbled out of the traps and never recovered, finishing last. Kersal Crystal, the other joint favourite, didn’t experience any trouble, but still wasn’t able to get into the top three, finishing in fourth place. Emerson Tobias finished fifth.
A favourite finally saw a win in the third race of the day. 5-2 race favourite, Beckhams Bessie, would have made any soccer star proud when she forced herself into the lead after the second bend. Heavenly May, the 6-1 longest shot of the race, had a slow start and lost ground on the first bend, but showed some determination in coming back to take second place, only a shoulder behind Bessie. Taking third place was Galipip Wildting, who finished ¾ lengths behind May, and only ¾ lengths ahead of Wrenbury Ripple. All of the top four hounds had chances to claim victory in this one. Highview Leader finished fifth, and Lagganmore Tufty finished in sixth after the worst start of the group.
