Question:

Bellybutton question. To pierce or not to pierce...?

I want to know the pros and cons to navel piercings. I'm a belly dancer, a salsa dancer, and a girlfriend. I see myself getting married not too far in the future, and my boyfriend likes bellybutton piercings. I wouldn't just be doing it for him (though that's part of the reason), as I like them too. I was just wondering what everyone's personal stories were, things that went wrongs, how long it took to heal, things you love about your piercing, etc. Thanks so much!

  1. i am 21 i have had my belly pierced since i was 12 i love it i took it out once(because i was in trouble at school and that was my punishment) and it healed i hated it so i went and got it done again never taken it out since..

but it is really up to u..that's just my opinion

  2. if your a belly dancer that is something to seriously consider because you can match your jewelry to your outfit BUT if you are considering getting married and having kids in the future STOP because a unattractive event will occur. your belly button ring hole will expand and after a pregnancy it will never be the same..

it also gets caught on a lot of thing like shirts!

    it is also very painful

  3. Things to consider:

You may have to take a bit of time away from dancing to let the piercing heal. A few weeks should be enough. You will need to make sure that costumes and clothing don't irritate the piercing. If you are sexually active, you need to make sure that your partner doesn't rub or knock the piercing during intercourse or get any bodily fluids on it. After the initial healing period (6-10 weeks) you can return to normal activities. When it comes to dance, listen to your body, if a movement hurts, don't do it and try again in a few weeks.

You want to go to a reputable piercing studio that will use a curved barbell as initial jewelry. They have a lower profile so they are less likely to get snagged on clothing. Make sure they are clean, check out examples of healed work and make sure they answer all of your questions no matter what. Make sure you feel comfortable there.

If your jewelry needs to be downsized in the first few weeks after piercing, you need to get your artist to change it for you. Quite often we use longer jewelry at first to allow for swelling. Once that goes down you can get properly fitted jewelry (important so that it's less likely to snag on clothing) It needs to be sterile so you need the piercer to do it. Once everything is healed you can change the jewelry by yourself. If you can't do it or don't feel comfortable, you can get the piercer to do it for you,

  4. I've had mine done since I was 12. They are cute, get one while you're still young. im 22 by the way and still loving it! and if you get pregant, they make special ones. and plus, who besides your bf is going to look at it anyway? i mean, after you take it out? there might be a little scar, but who cares, its a belly button, its not your face. it takes like a week to heel. just make sure that it stays centered while its healing. it didnt hurt too much, but then again, I have a good pain tolerance. I think it was like 40 to get done. I like the circular bead rings best to get it pierced because its easier to clean while its healing and you have a wider range to move it around to make sure it doesnt get stuck in the same spot, i mean, to rotate it while it heals.

go for it, look at all the 40 year olds who  are doing it now! i dont think it will go out of style.

as for the person who said it will look nasty after you have kids, I had mine in the whole time I was pregnant, all except for about 3 weeks, and while they do your ultrasounds. but mine didnt stretch out like they say. plus, they have special barbels for that now that bend and are long. but, then again, I didnt get THAT big. I gained 40 pounds, which is a lot, but for a first pregnancy, its not that bad. I know people who have gained 90-100pounds. but as long as you stay fit and healthy, it shouldnt stretch out much. and if it looks like its about to rip out of your stomach, take it out and when you lose the baby weight, get it re-peirced.

  5. okay no one will see it unless you wear a belly shirt

    so you can hide it

then are not cons besides pain and maybe a scar

    its nothin

im was 14 when i got one

  6. sortof a bad question to ask , your gunna get a butt load of negative ppl saying it is "trashy"

I saw go for it hun , i would get mine pierced but im 5 months pregnant ; hehehe . you get it because you want it,pain levels are diffrent on diffrent people noone feels the same pain . Dont let anyone say it hurts or it dosent hurt. Its better to have your own experience,ya know ? Good luck , and have fun .

  7. Piercing are wonderful because if you decide you don't want it anymore you can just take it out.

They look really cute, if worn right.

The only cons that I can think of would be getting an infection.  But this will only happen if you do not take care of your piercing as you are instructed.

I got mine done when I was about 14 and nothing went wrong at all.

I went to a professional shop and followed all of the after care instructions that they gave me.

Your navel can take 4 months to a year to heal.  Just listen to whatever you piercer tells you to leave it in for.  Every piercer has a different amount of time they want there clients to leave piercings in for before they change them.

I love my piercings because I think they are cute and add to me.

Even though piercings are now starting to be displayed by everyone, I still love them because not EVERY single person in the world has them.  I also love the thrill of getting a piercing, they are very addicting.

The best place to go and get it done is to find a reputable, clean, friendly professional parlor.  No going to a hole in the wall place to get it done.

    Hope this helps.

**** i got my bellybutton pierced last december for christmas. i waited 6 weeks and changed, i shouldnt have but i was very excited! i used a ring my sister bought me and i didnt know how to clean it with a barbell since i only had a hoop in before.. so i kept taking the piercing OUT to clean it then kept putting it backin, though i think i only did it like 3 or 4 times, a couple weeks after it had a bump near it, normal i think. then after the piercing started sticking to my stomach which ISNT normal.. and it would hurt to try and rip it off..it was like glued! then after a while i noticed that the piercing had MOVED UP and was almost out of my stomach! then i took the piercing out then when i showered the little piece of skin left kind a"ripped" so now i have this huuuge scar on my bellybutton - a big BUBBLE at that.. i still dont regret getting it done. i was an expierence! and you should WAIT at least 6 months or a year .. and only use SURGICAL STEEL cuz my sister got me a sterling silver bellybutton ring! ... and idk if mine got infected or migrated? or got infected THEN migrated? but ugh .. yah thats my story for ya! and my sister changed hers a day after mine too since we both got ours pierced on the same day and hers also seemed to migrate a little.. bellybutton and eyebrow piercings tend to migrate. so be careful !
