Belmar Open Beach Volleyball Tournament turned out to be huge success – Volleyball News
The double gender beach volleyball tournament, the Belmar Open, had an amazing run over the past weekend.
The beautiful Beach of Belmar hosted the tournament and elite professional beach volleyball players got a chance to showcase their amazing skills. Shared prize money of $100,000 was on stake. Furthermore, the event also created an opportunity for participants
to vie for a berth at the exclusive Milwaukee Shootout. The entry was free, which encouraged great number of fans to come and watch the matches.
The tournament was a part of the Jose Cuervo Pro Beach Volleyball Series and it was featured as the second event of 2012 season. The tournament covered its length from June 22-24. The special courts were set up at the Fifth Avenue beach in Belmar. The competition
started out with the qualifying stage on Friday. The successful teams of the qualification tournament entered the main-draw, which started off on Saturday. The main draw was followed by influential final round. The semi-finals and medal matches were played
on Sunday.
In the men’s tournament, pairing of Shane Donohue and Kristopher Fraser created a whole lot of entertainment for beach volleyball enthusiasts. They finished in the upper half of the standings after winning their first match. They could not qualify for the
final round of the tournament, but still expressed delight about 100 points that they earned on the tour.
Donohue said: “This [Belmar] is it for us. Manhattan Beach [California] may be the biggest event, but this is it for me. I love Belmar.” He further added, “I get to sleep at home, walk to the tournament and have my family and friends watching me. There’s
nothing like having the home field.”
In the women’s section, the dynamic duo of Jenny Kropp and Whitney Pavlik did an amazing job. They received huge applause from fans on account of their amazing skills. They bagged two straight series wins by edging out the team of Raquel Ferreira and Kristen
Batt. They dominated the opponents and finished the match in consecutive sets. The final set scores were 20-22, 21-12, 15- 9.
Kropp praised the effort of organisers and appreciated the support of fans.
In the next run, the Jose Cuervo tour will make its next stop in Chicago. The Chicago Open beach volleyball tournament will be kicked off on July 13 and it will cover its length in three days. Following the completion of Chicago Open, the Jose Cuervo tour
will feature four other tournaments of similar nature at different venues.
