Belmont Bruins win against Tennessee Tech in straight sets – Volleyball News
The Belmont Bruins Girls’ Volleyball Team collided with in-state opponents Tennessee Tech on Tuesday, September 6. It was a mid-week non-conference match, which brought the two rivals together at the Curb Event Centre in Nashville Tennessee. The Bruins totally dominated the Golden Eagles and held them off for a 3-0 (25-15, 25-17, and 25-12) victory. The Tennessee Tech failed to claim its first win of the 2011 Season, while Bruins celebrated the great win.
Junior Kelsey Gray started things off for Bruins in the first set. The Tennessee Tech (TTU) committed too many reception errors and suffered a set back. They were promptly dragged under the cloud of uncertainty as Bruins jumped to a strong lead. Sophomore Natalie Penrod raised Bruins’ score via prolific kills. TTU was in trouble as Belmont continued at the same pace and stretched the gap of points. The better combination of attack and defence enabled Bruins to claim the opening set of the game by 10 points at 25-15.
Tennessee Tech struggled in the following set and managed to score good points. They were not totally out of the blues but put up a good effort to shorten the gap. Bruins continued with hard hitting and led the score with 3 points at 10-7. In the next run, Golden Eagles added three points while Bruins converted the score from 10 to 15. Tennessee Tech squad still trailed behind and received another defeat with a margin of 8 point at 25-17.
Bruins controlled the game in third set and influenced their opponents with a 7-point lead. The Golden Eagles used freshman Sarah Teel but could not achieve the desired results. The spirited effort of the Bruins allowed them to cover the length of third set with success. They captured a 25-12 win in third set and seized match victory.
The Head Coach of Belmont, Deane Webb, was satisfied with his team’s performance. He shared his thoughts about the match in following manner: "It's great to be back at home, it always is! We love playing here in front of a great crowd and the Pembroke guys. I was just really impressed with our team's focus throughout the match. There were several opportunities throughout the match to really lose focus and our team remained focused and really did a good job in serve receive and stayed in system almost the entire evening and never got aced a single time. I'm really proud of the job our passers did tonight."
The Tennessee Tech Team will now meet UNC Asheville on Friday. Moreover, they have two matches on Sunday against Chattanooga and East Tennessee State, respectively.
