Belmont Stakes 2011 - Brilliant Speed back in contention- Secretariat Bloodline key factor
Brilliant Speed’s tester at the Kentucky Derby paid off and after resting in the Preakness Stakes he is ready to give it another go against six other horses that started at the Kentucky Derby and are ready to break in the Belmont Stakes 2011.
Kentucky Derby was a big decider for Brilliant Speed because he has done well on turf but his owner and trainer were not sure of how he was going to perform on dirt.
Finishing seventh in the Derby was proof enough for trainer Tom Albertrani to unleash his three-year old colt amongst eleven more contenders for the Belmont Stakes. It’s another chance for Brilliant Speed to challenge the likes of Animal Kingdom, Shackleford,
Nehro and Mucho Macho Man.
As far as his prerace work out is concerned, Brilliant Speed ran half a mile in 50.59 seconds at Belmont Park while ridden by Dan Blacker on 7 June.
Trainer, Tom Albertrani, is hopeful that Brilliant Speed will do well in the Belmont Stakes after watching him closing in like he did in the Kentucky Derby and just losing five and a half lengths behind Animal Kingdom.
Brilliant Speed has a strong pedigree, sired by Dynaformer, and, mare Speed Success by Gone West, indicates the solid bloodline will have help his career.
The dark bay colt lost the Dania Beach Stakes by a slim margin but came back to claim the Grade One Blue Grass Stakes in an exciting photo finish.
Talking about the Kentucky Derby, trainer Tom Albertrani, confessed that the start was a little dodgy and these things happen when it’s not your day, on any other day this wouldn’t have happened and things might have gone smoothly in the shape of a better
finish than he did, but being beaten like he did was not disappointing at all.
Brilliant Speed’s pedigree and the solid bloodline also show, Secretariat and Brilliant Speed are related and he is from the same lineage. Secretariat’s great stamina and determination is enough to win big races and Brilliant Speed might cause an upset.
Losing by five and a half lengths in the Kentucky Derby could be of significance because the Kentucky Derby is a quarter mile shorter than the Belmont Stakes, and Brilliant Speed might have needed a few more lengths to finish on top of Animal Kingdom and
distance could prove to be a decisive factor at Belmont Park.
