Belmont Stakes 2011 - Ruler On Ice settles back in Monmouth Park, may race in Haskell Invitational
George and Lori Hall must be in seventh heaven after their three year old chestnut gelding, Ruler On Ice, pulled an upset win in the 2011 Belmont Stakes.
With his superb running he was able to achieve the unimaginable. Now after returning to Monmouth Park, he awaits his next start. He is based in New Jersey’s Monmouth Park along with his trainer, Kelly Breen.
Ruler On Ice won the 143rd running of the Belmont Stakes in a final time of 2 minutes and 30.88 seconds. He was favoured at pre-race odds of 24-1.
Kelly J Breen was able to pick up his first Triple Crown race win at the Belmont Stakes and is the first local trainer to win since 1987. He started making his way to the horse racing industry from very humble beginnings, as a thirteen year old, he washed
cars to earn money for riding.
He expressed his joy over winning the Belmont Stakes by saying “You run in these races all over the place and it’s nice, but when you come back home, that’s the best, and Monmouth Park is home to me”.
Kelly Breen was born on May 13, 1969, and wanted to be a jockey but had to settle for being a trainer. After struggling to earn a righteous position in the horse racing world, he was able to saddle his first winner in 1992.
His major wins include the Pilgrim Stakes in 2005, Kentucky Cup Juvenile Stakes in 2008. Kelly Breen also trains Pants On Fire, who was entered in the 2011, Kentucky Derby. He currently resides in Tinton Falls.
Ruler On Ice is gelded and is sired by Roman Ruler. Champagne Glow is his mother. He has enjoyed two runner-up positions and a third place in his 2011 starts.
The Belmont Stakes is his only win in 2011, which was achieved by, defeating Stay Thirsty, by three quarter length. He had the jockey services of a Peru-born jockey, Jose Valdivia, who had ridden him in his past four starts.
Ruler On Ice’s co-owner, Lori Hall, believes that the colt is showing improvement in each performance, but he does have a tendency to swing his head once he gets ahead of everyone so to stay focused he needs blinkers.
It may have been the blinkers which made him earn $51.50, $26 and $13.60 as the winning horse. Lori Hall expressed her joy on the spectacular win by saying “It was amazing, because we really were the underdog”.
Apart from other mundane details regarding the horse, it is worthy to not that he as a youngster was very headstrong and impulsive so he had to be castrated.
Ruler On Ice has the privilege of racing on diverse surfaces and never on the same ground. May be this can help the colt in the upcoming races, and other $1 million stakes at Monmouth, which include, the Haskell Invitational, and, the Pennsylvania Derby
at Parx Racing, which is to take place in late September.
