Belmopan is the capital city of Belize Central America, which is bordered north by Mexico and west by Guatemala. Belmopan was established after hurricane HATTI in the early sixties, which caused great damage to the old capitol then named Belize City. Belmopan is farther inland and on high ground. It also houses all major Government offices and foreign embassies.
