I am getting a squeel from a belt when my car starts and during the noise it feels like the car is missing (idling rough and will sometimes die). After it dies, I can fire it up with no noise and the car will drive fine. This happens sporadically and not everytime Any mechanics have any idea what is going on?

It is 1998 Mitsubishi Mirage 1.5 L

  1. Improper belt tension or worn out belt.

  2. When you start the engine, it pulls the battery down. Once the engine starts, the alternator has to work harder to bring the battery back up. This makes the loose belt squeal.

Tighten the belt, and have the battery checked.

  3. All these other answers are very good possibilities, but in the mean time if you just want the belt to stop squealing, put a couple of drops of liquid dish detergent on the belt and inside the pulley ring.

  4. that's just the belt needs tightening some on it they will do that, its the alternator putting back the charge that it takes to start the vehicle that makes it do that, tightening the belt usually helps for a while until you have to replace it,good luck.

  5. Sounds like you idle air control valve is sticking . Which can whistle and soud as a belt squeel as well as cause rough idle and stalling .
