Belts(not seat belts)in my car?

there's some kind of belts(once again,NOT seat belts) that my mechanic said were really bad&needed replacing.what do these belts do?

  1. the belts turn your alternator which is your source of power to the car and the a/c for cooling your car.  I first would need to know how old your car is,  if its old like close to 10 years old then your mechanic is right and that's not a bad price so let him change them.  If your car is only a few years old the mechanic is giving you a line of bull.

    There is the accessory (serpentine) belt that powers the AC and the alternators.

    And then there is the timing belt that makes the valves time correctly (open and close).

    The accessory belt cost $50 to $150 (parts and labor).  The timing belt can cost $400 to $1500 (pars and labor).  So you have to know exactly what he was saying.
