Ben Ainslie clinches gold medal in Finn class of 2011 Weymouth and Portland International Regatta
Great Britain’s Ben Ainslie landed a first-place finish in Finn class when he finished on top of the standings with 17 points. But on the final day of 2011 Weymouth and Portland International Regatta Finn class, he secured a second place in the medal race
of the event to claim gold medal. France’s Jonathan Lobert grabbed silver medal while Netherlands’ Pieter Jan Postma took home bronze.
Ainslie won the gold medal with 19 points overall, after the medal race at a 31-point difference from the silver medalist Jonathan Lobert from France, who earned 50 points at the end of regatta. Netherlands’ Pieter Jan Postma, who led the standings for a
couple of days in the event, eventually settled for bronze with 52 points.
While speaking to the local media after his victory, Ainslie said, “I’m delighted to come away with the gold. It’s been a great week for me personally but from a team standpoint it has as well.  We’ve got six medals, which is fantastic and if we can keep
that going for next year that will be great for us as a team.”
He added, “The new Nothe course is quite tricky tactically, very shifty, puffy, and for me it was a good race in the end.  I started off I think second or third at the top mark and managed to pull through to win which was a nice way to end the week off after
it’s been a solid week.”
