Ben Ainslie leads 2012 Finn Gold Cup despite bad weather – Sailing News
Great Britain’s Ben Ainslie proved his class to the rest of the Finn fleet when he faced some of the harshest weather conditions during his run in the 2012 Finn Gold Cup.
With his impressive performance on the third day of the regatta, Ainslie was able to retain the top spot on the overall standings after setting sail in six races, including a discard.
The wind conditions on the Falmouth waters were not at all friendly on Day 3 and the fleet had problems completing the proceedings.
The racing committee had two races scheduled for the day at cold and windy Falmouth Bay, which did not seem possible because the breeze was gusting around the racing area up to 20 knots, starting from lower 16 knots across the waters.
However, the fleet showed great determination and completed the scheduled races in the presence of the northerly winds.
The factor that really helped the sailors to complete the proceedings without any crashes was the calmness of the seas. Despite the heavy winds, which usually make big waves, the seas were calm and the participants had no trouble sailing across the Falmouth
waters.
The British sailor, Ainslie, led in both races from the very beginning and proved that experience always succeeds. He has already sailed under such conditions during his circuit run and knows how to tackle in situations like these. Nevertheless, he collected
two bullets on the third day and sustained his overall position in the regatta standings.
