Ben Ainslie of Great Britain claims gold medal in Finn class: 2012 London Olympic Games
Weather conditions on the Weymouth and Portland waters remained strong from the start of the 2012 London Olympic Games which troubled the Finn fleet a bit in the start but the fleet continued their proceedings and was able to complete the scheduled races
for the regatta.
With some top notch sailing skills on the race course, Great Britain’s Ben Ainslie managed to hit the top podium place of the class and claimed gold medal with 46 points. Ainslie grabbed two bullets in his regatta campaign after participating in 11 races,
including a discarded race and a medal race.
The British sailor had a slow start of the regatta as he claimed two second finishes along with a sixth to place himself on the second podium. The first couple of days were dominated by the Danish Finn sailor, Jonas Hogh-Christensen who grabbed a couple
of bullet finishes in the start to lead the fleet standings.
Ainslie was way down to the Danish sailor but he cruised back into the event with tremendous sailing genius and occupied the top podium place with higher finishes in the last races. Despite the fact that Hogh-Christensen has the same points but Ainslie’s
performance in the final proceedings brought him up in the standings.
Overall standings at the end of the regatta:
1. GBR Ben Ainslie 2 2 6 (12) 4 3 1 3 6 1 18 = 46 Points
2. DEN Jonas Hogh-Christensen 1 1 2 7 1 2 (8) 4 5 3 20 = 46 Points
