Ben Campbell fails to impress at the British Amateur Championship
Ben Campbell had the best of starts among the Kiwi contingent that was there to contest the British Amateur Championship. Kiwi number 2 shot a 2-over par 72 in the first round at the Royal Troon.
Ben had a decent first round. He hit birdies on the third and fourth hole but could not maintain the momentum and then bogeyed thrice to surrender his lead.
Campbell, who could not keep up his good work of the first round, bowed down at the 20th hole (Stroke play) after a hard fought battle with the American Tyler Raber, who was ranked way below at 836 in the world.
The Kiwi is ranked 152nd in the world and he was the only player from New Zealand to progress further in to the match play stages.
High hopes were pinned on the players of New Zealand, especially on Ben Campbell, who has done well in the previous championships that he participated in.
The kiwi number two has finished second twice in the Australian Amateur championship, but could not manage to continue his good run of form in the British Amateur Championships.
Players play the stroke play format on the first two days of the event, played on both the courses. After the field is cut in to 64, the match play format decides the winner over the course of four days.
It was an overall below expectation performance by the Kiwi team, that came into the tournament with high hopes and expectations. It would have been a good practice for the New Zealand team for the World Team Championship.
They will learn from their mistakes and surely they must have gained considerable experience. They will sit and analyze their performances at the British Amateur Championship.
Eisenhower World Team Championship is being held in Turkey, this year, in October. Surely the Kiwi team would learn from the mistakes it made at the British Amateurs and will try its best to do well in the upcoming World Team Championships.
In Turkey, Ben Campbell will once again be the flag carrier for the Kiwi’s. He is their best player and is expected to do well.
