Ben Cherington new General Manager of the Boston Red Sox – MLB News
The Boston Red Sox on Tuesday, October 25 elevated Ben Cherington as the next general manager for the team. As Theo Epstein opted for joining the Chicago Cubs, the best candidature ultimately belonged to the deserving Cherington.
Cherington is known to have long professional affiliation with the team, serving them for over a decade now. That attachment to the team had its worthy reward on Tuesday when he became the general manager.
Revealing the decision that the team management had made, the Red Sox president Larry Lucchino referred to the quiet period that Cherington spent while serving the team and avoiding the limelight that invariably follows anyone related to a big franchise.
"He is the ultimate team player and his hunger for the future success of the Boston Red Sox is second to none," said Red Sox president/CEO Larry Lucchino. "In his quiet way, eschewing the spotlight and the accolades, Ben and the Red Sox organization are
inextricably intertwined.”
Larry Lucchino went ahead and stated that his team will have difficulty imagining a side without Cherington leading it. Cherington, it is to be noted, has served the Red Sox for over 13 years now.
"Through that, I developed a passion for baseball, and specifically for the Red Sox," Cherington said. "It's that passion that's led me down an incredibly fortunate path to this day."
Cherington taking such a big responsibility comes in the aftermath of the collapse that the team witnessed in the 2011 season of Major League Baseball. Not only did it shake the team, but also Epstein who has now chosen to move to the Chicago Cubs.
That the team fell and could not live up to the expectations of the fans is something Cherington knows and he wants to compensate that with instilling a new spirit in the team.
Despite all the disappointment that has descended upon the Boston Red Sox, the new general manager is resolved to do what is expected of him and that is to breathe new life into the team and build their confidence.
