Ben Cherington sets priorities for the Boston Red Sox – MLB News
The Boston Red Sox new manager Ben Cherington on Wednesday, October 26 put down what he thinks are the set of priorities supposed to be addressed on an immediate basis. Finding the right manager tops the list.
The Red Sox failed to qualify for the post-season with ensuing predictable disenchantment in the circle of fans. Not only that, a tumultuous reshuffle in the team also subsequently occurred with general manager and manager going.
Among the most influential guidance and motivation that factored into the victory of the Boston Red Sox was Terry Francona. In almost nine decades (86 years to be exact), it was for the first time that the Boston Red Sox won their first World Series title.
However, Francona had to eventually leave due to the disastrous result of the regular season whereby the team could not even become part of the post-season. This necessitates the need of finding a manager who enjoys command and authority on the team.
Cherington, however, wants it simple. He does not wish to go for big names starring in the league. His choice is apparently someone whose excellence has not yet received beeps from the radars of fame.
"The list of guys with big league managing experience on their resume who are clearly available is pretty short, so I don't think we can put ourselves in a box to limit ourselves to that pool," said Cherington.
It is this reason that forces him to say he does not want a big star to lead the team.
"I just think we need to get the right guy. We're not looking for the next star manager. We're looking for the right fit for the Red Sox for 2012 and beyond, and that's our goal.”
Bringing back David Ortiz and Jonathan Papelbon is the next priority for filling out the rotation. The culture of the clubhouse is to be changed, he thinks as a few recent incidents did not throw a good light on the team. Thus he has a lot in his mind in
the off-season to settle.
