Ben Crane and Camilo Villegas to donate winning prize of the Zurich Classic 3-Hole Shoot Out – Golf News
Ben Crane and Camilo Villegas have decided to donate their winning cheques, $2000 each, to the charity after becoming the co-winners of the 1912-Inspired Zurich Classic 3-Hole Shoot Out on Tuesday, April 24, 2012.
A total of seven players including Luke Donald, Graeme McDowell, Rickie Fowler, Justin Rose, Camilo Villegas, Keegan Bradley and Ben Crane participated in the 100th anniversary of the event, first played in 1912.
Both Crane and Villegas finished the event with one-under par to share the prize money. Crane donated the winning amount to St. Bernard Project and Villegas contacted Give to Colombia for the donation.
In addition to that, the other participants also received $1000 to provide to the charities of their own choice.
Vermont Disaster Relief Fund, The First Tee of Chicago, American Red Cross for Tsunami Relief, The G-Mac Foundation and Blessings in a Backpack received $1000 donation each.
The most interesting fact of the event was that the players used classic hickory shaft clubs, similar to the clubs used 100 years ago.
Speaking of the highlight, Luke Donald was the only player who succeeded in making an eagle with an old-fashioned club.
“This event was a fun and exciting way to celebrate our 100-year anniversary in the United States as well as a century of advancement in the game,” said Mike Foley, CEO North America Commercial for Zurich.
“Congratulations to co-winners Ben and Camilo for demonstrating his skills in classic style and scoring a win for their respective charities”.
The golf community all over the world has praised the idea of holding such an event, as it helps in educating people about the history of the game.
Moreover, these kinds of events also bring people closer to the game and their interest in philanthropic measures.
The official Zurich Classic of New Orleans is scheduled to start from Thursday, April 26, 2012, at the TPC Louisiana.
Bubba Watson will be defending his title in a strong field that features nine PGA winners of the 2012 golf season as well as 12 major winners.
He is among the hot favourites for a win in the event because of his great form on the tour.
