Ben Curtis takes the second round lead at the Valero Texas Open – Golf News
Ben Curtis added another 67 to take the clubhouse lead during the weather-delayed second round of the Valero Texas Open, on Friday, April 20, 2012.
Curtis started the second round with a four-stroke deficit against the overnight leader Matt Every. Another bogey-free round took him to the top of the leaderboard before the two-hour storm suspended the game.
“Well, playing obviously really well,” Curtis said. “You know, the key around here is if you can drive it straight, keep it in the fairway, give yourself a chance to get at some of these pins, you know, with the slope of the greens and stuff like that, it
makes it a lot easier from the fairway”.
He believes that he could have managed to score even better if he had not missed a few birdie chances. Overall, his putting was impressive throughout the first two rounds that he has played so far.
“I missed a couple short, maybe three, four birdie putts that I should have made inside ten feet but other than that, I'm not going to complain and, you know, the course is in great shape and greens are fantastic, rolling really good and there's a lot of
slope to them,” he said.
David Mathis took the second spot after carding the same score as Curtis had with the help of six birdies against a lone bogey.
Cameron Tringale’s performance was even better as he managed a bogey-free seven-under par 65.
However, his even-par score in the opening round did not allow him to surge to the top of the leaderboard. He was tied for the third position after 36 holes.
The highlight of Tringale’s performance includes five birdies on the first six holes he played on Friday.
Matt Every, the overnight leader, slipped down the leaderboard after he faltered in the second round. He was two-over for the round through 16 holes before the storm hit the area.
He will now continue his game with an 11-foot birdie chance on the par-4 17th hole on Saturday, early in the morning. He is now two strokes behind the leader at seven-under par 34-hole score.
