Ben Kohles rises quickly on the golf scene after turning professional
After winning two of the three Web.com Tour events that he played, Ben Kohles has become one of the hottest sensations in the sport of golf these days.
A month ago, when he decided to turn professional, no one could have even thought that he would make such a strong surge in the tour’s money list – he currently ranks third with $262,875 prize money.
The top-25 players in the list will automatically earn the full-time PGA Tour card for 2013. With just seven Web.com Tour events remaining in the season, it is quite obvious that the American will make it to the top-25, comfortably.
Kohles’ decision of turning professional did not come as he may have planned. He was preparing to participate in an amateur event, when he received a phone call to participate in the Nationwide Children's Hospital Invitational, after Peter Uihlein announced
his withdrawal.
Since it was his first professional event, he decided to turn professional, and made it official by checking the ‘Pro’ box on the tournament’s registration form.
Right from the start of the tournament, he remained in contention for the top position and took the title home, after posting a 12-under par tournament score.
His performance in the Cox Classic Presented by Lexus of Omaha was even better, as he recorded a victory with a three-stroke margin over Dawie van der Walt. His final score at the end of the tournament was 24-under par 260.
After such a strong start to his rookie season, he was awarded with an exemption to play the PGA Tour’s Wyndham Championship.
"It has been quite a remarkable ride, but it hasn't been easy -- it has just looked easy," Kohles said with a laugh.
"I've been fortunate. I have had some good breaks and I have taken advantage of some opportunities, but I really can't explain how all of this has happened so quickly. It has been amazing”.
This week, he is set to make the fourth tour start of his career and stands among the hot favourites for a win in the Mylan Classic. The tournament will be held at the Southpointe Golf Club, from Thursday, August 30, 2012.
