Ben Spies, Jorge Lorenzo to start Assen GP around championship leader Stoner – MotoGP news
Yamaha Factory Racing riders Ben Spies and Jorge Lorenzo will start the Iveco TT Assen Grand Prix around MotoGP championship leader Casey Stoner of Repsol Honda.
Spies and Lorenzo will be placed second and fourth on the starting grid. The Repsol Honda prime rider Casey Stoner is placed between Yamaha factory riders at third place. Spies will start his race from the first row while teammate Lorenzo will do it from
the second row.
Spies said, “The best qualifying of the year so far, it was a good session for us. We would have liked to get pole position but unfortunately on my fast lap Loris went down and there were a lot of yellow flags.”
Spies also hopes for Capirossi to get well and race at Assen. He tried to score his season’s first pole seat of 2011 but came home with his best qualifying seat yet for this season.
He was almost satisfied with his performance in the qualifying practice. His new red and white liveried Yamaha M1 is running well. Spies is confident with his race pace and seems aware of the race conditions they will be facing.
Former 2011 championship leader, Jorge Lorenzo was not as fast as his American teammate, Spies. The Spaniard was at a decent fourth place in the 90-minute final free practice session but was not able to improve his pace for the qualifying session. In the
short practice time which affected everyone, Lorenzo was also not able to tweak race settings for high-speed chicanes.
Lorenzo said, “The most important thing is we can see that our closest championship rivals are pretty close but I know we still need to make a step forward to be better. I have had problems in the fast corners today, I didn’t have so much grip on the rear
so we have work to do for tomorrow.”
He faced a tough day with a long final free practice session and qualifying practice. However, he is optimistic to score a win at the special 50th anniversary of Yamaha in grand prix racing.
