Ben Spies content with his 11th place finish at the Italian Grand Prix – MotoGP news
Ben Spies has said that his 11th place finish at the Italian Grand Prix was the best he could manage in state of illness.
The rider was ill during the Mugello race has already had a forgetful season. He was battling it out with other riders on the grid for the top-six place in the earlier stages of the race.
The American started to fall down the grid in the latter laps and moved down to 11th not being able to score any points.
“I'm so disappointed, not just for me but for my whole team and Yamaha who have worked so hard this weekend,” he said. “I was feeling really not right from before warm-up this morning and it just got worse over the day. I was struggling to put three laps
together at a time in the race and fighting waves of dizziness and trying not be physically sick in my helmet.”
“Clinica Mobile did their best to help me before the race but it was a huge challenge to focus on the bike at the speeds we do,” he added.
Yamaha team director Massimo Meregalli said he was sorry for Spies and the team as they had worked really hard over the weekend to come up with a good result. The team was confident to get some decent race pace but things did not quite go the way they had
intended for.
He added that he is confident that Spies had the potential to come up with the desired results from the race if he had not been suffering from an illness.
Meregalli explained that Spies was very ill on the morning of the race and despite his illness, he went on to put up a huge effort in order to get the team some results. He is happy with the way he put in the effort to finish the race. He is confident that
the American rider will be able to bounce back in Laguna next week for his home race.
It will be interesting to see how the American rider fares in front of his home ground despite having a poor season so far.
