Ben Spies thrilled to see come-back of 1000s – MotoGP news
The rookie of 2009 year, Ben Spies is yet to run a full official season with Factory Yamaha Racing team, but he is still on toes see the new regulations coming up for the return of 1000cc machines by 2012.
Spies was the new kid in premier class with Monster Yamaha Tech3 team in 2009, but his outrageous performance claiming two podium finishes and one pole position stated that he could be a smooth rider to conquer the present 800cc Grand Prix prototypes. Texan
still looks for 1000s to be more likely for him.
“When the 1000s come it’s going to be a whole lot different,” said Spies, he has won four AMA titles consisting of three SBK, one Xtreme, and then one world title in 1000cc class.
“I’m excited for when that happens, because I think my style will work better with those bikes.”
“But I think I’m not doing too many things wrong [with the 800cc]. I just need to work on a few key elements and we’ll have a decent year this year.”
Ben Spies performed well in the two pre-season tests held at Sepang in February. He finished sixth in first and fifth in second test overall. By the end of both tests Factory Yamaha duo, Jorge Lorenzo and Ben Spies finished as the top Yamaha riders.
“Myself and Jorge ride differently for sure,” said Spies, when asked to compare styles with the reigning world champion. “We each have our strong points. There is stuff I do better and stuff he does better.”
“My style has changed a lot compared with a year ago. Does it need to change a whole lot more? Not really, but for sure there are things I can do better. But there’s also some stuff that I want to keep that I think I do well.”
“For sure one of our strengths at the moment is the front end of the bike. We’ve always known that with the Yamaha. And I’m good on the brakes. But we also lack a bit of corner speed. You’ve got to find that balance between what is better.”
“Every rider has strong and weak points. I feel comfortable when the bike is sliding and moving around. I’m not saying I’m perfect at it, but I’m probably stronger at the end of the race. When the heat comes out and the tires get old our pace doesn’t seem
to be affected too much.”
Jorge Lorenzo and Ben Spies are expected to test ride the prototype versions of 1000cc machines on July 03, after the Italian Grand Prix at Mugello. The third final pre-season test will be held at Losail, Qatar on March 13-14.
