Ben Swift positive for an early win in the 2013 season
After having an outstanding 2012 season, Ben Swift of Team Sky Procycling is already making plans for the season ahead.
The cyclist has decided to start the 2013 season with the Classics and will follow-up towards the more serious goals of the year.
His performance in the 2012 season include a first place finish at the Scratch Race World Championships, two stage victories and a point’s classifications victory at the Tour de Pologne 2012.
Swift finished second at the World Championships points race and the Madison World Championships, teaming up with his Geraint Thomas.
“I only had two wins on the road this year but I had 8 seconds and 5 thirds so I was close a lot of the time so I just want to turn those around and into wins,” he told Cyclingnews.
“I’d love to break into the Classics like Milan-San Remo and get some experience there”.
The 24-year-old will start the new season with the UCI Inaugural event, Santos Tour Down Under and is positive to find the right form early on.
Swift had a huge success at the Australian race previously, he claimed two stages and occupied the third podium spot after the final general classifications.
The cyclist marked his professional debut with Team Katusha in 2009 and spent a period of one-year with the team.
He was approached by the British side, Team Sky in 2010 and is certain to continue his third consecutive season with the team.
Swift is known for his all-round abilities for both the track and road racing and most of his 2012 season was focuses on track as he tried to make it through the 2012 Olympic Games team.
He could not make it through the English team squad for the London Olympics but was picked up for the World Championships squad which gave him an opportunity to ride the Madison and the points race.
Ben returned to the road racing at the Tour of Pologne and he had quite a successful Tour of Poland that runs along with the Tour de France.
While Bradley Wiggins and company dominated the French Grand Tour, Swift was busy fighting his own battle at the Tour de Pologne 2012.
“That race was definitely a highlight for me. I wanted to go there and have GC in my mind but that got shattered on the first day with a puncture. I had really good form, though, with two wins, a second and third,” he noted.
The Brit was expected to bag stages at the Vuelta a Espana but despite getting close to a win on number of occasions, he could not really get his guts together at the final Grand Tour race of the season.
