Ben Wagland disposes of Constantin Christ in the opening round of Boys’ Singles – US open 2011
Australian competitor, Ben Wagland, took down the unseeded German, Constantin Christ, in the opening round of Boys’ Singles at the US Open championships on Monday afternoon.
The contest was played at the Court 9 of the USTA Billie Jean King National Tennis Center in Flushing Meadows Park, of Queens, New York City, United States, with Wagland registering a straight sets victory to move into the second
round of the Grand Slam tournament.
It took one hour and thirty five minutes for the Australian to settle the final scores 6-2, 7-6(5), to dispose of Christ from the competition in an assertive manner. Wagland cruised through the opener with commanding aggression
but had to go through some tough times in the second set before concluding victory in the end.
Wagland delivered 65 per cent of his serve on target, reeling off 29 out of 44 first serve points and firing four thudding aces in the match. His German opponent excelled over him by securing 32 out of 48 first serve points but
failed to crack in any serve break, finishing on the losing end. Christ had two break opportunities in the matchup but was denied both times by the brilliance of Wagland to remain on the back foot throughout the contest.
Christ was off to a sloppy start in the opener and dropped his serve in the very first game of the match to let the early advantage to the Aussie opponent. Wagland fully capitalized on his early breakthrough and kept playing aggressive
tennis to keep the momentum of the game in his hand. The Australian nailed his second serve break of the day in the seventh game to take a substantial position in the opener, serving for the set at 5-2. Wagland had no real trouble in taking the first set at
6-2 to get one up in the contest and kept pressing his opponent to submit.
More competitive tennis was witnessed in the following set, with both men failing to crack in a serve break. The scores got dead locked at 6-6 and a tie breaker round was enforced into play. The decider also went on neck-to-neck
before a vital mini-break did the trick for Wagland, bestowing victory upon him at 7-6(5).
Wagland moved into the next round of the US Open to face the 15th seeded Briton, Oliver Golding, for a place in the third round of the tournament.
