Ben Wagland toils to victory against Jannick Lupescu in Boys’ singles opening round – French Open 2011
18-year-old Australian, Ben Wagland, won his opening round matchup against the Dutch competitor, Jannick Lupescu, in the Boys’ category of Roland Garros on Monday. The exciting contest was played in Paris, France, where Wagland
took down his opponent in a three-setter, 3-6, 6-4, 6-2, taking one hour and fifty six minutes of play to advance to the second round of the Grand Slam tournament.
The Australian displayed his sheer brilliance to bounce back in the contest after he dropped the opening set early. Wagland reeled off the following two sets to register a memorable win for him in the first round of the French
Open.
Lupescu had an excellent start to the contest, bagging the opener to exert early pressure upon the Australian but tend to lose focus in the later parts of the game. The Dutch failed to sustain the winning momentum he got from the
opener and slumped right away to lose the second set, letting Wagland back in the game. The Australian seized the opportunity and went on to devastate Lupescu in the final set to conclude an emphatic victory at Roland Garros.
The Aussie delivered 61 percent of his first serve on target and secured 38 of 57 points on it. Wagland crafted 14 break opportunities and converted five of them en route to victory, while Lupescu cashed in four of nine break points
in the contest.
Lupescu’s pathetic first serve of 43 percent was not sufficient enough to contain the aggressive Aussie opponent but he still reeled 28 out of 39 first serve points in the game. The Dutch sprayed a number of errant strokes all
over the court and conceded 10 costly double faults which eventually wore him out in the contest. Lupescu looked very confident in the opening set and stung three serve breaks in response to the one break point of Wagland to seal the first set at 6-3.
Tide turned in the next set the Australian gradually gathered pace to take down Lupescu. After an early exchange of serve breaks, a decisive break point from Wagland marked an end to the second at 6-4, levelling the contest at
1-1. The Aussie then rocketed to victory in the third set, breaking his opponent two out of five times and closing the set at 6-2 to advance to the second round of the French Open.
Wagland will now take on the French wildcard entrant, Tristan Lamasine, who was victorious against Diego Hidalgo of Ecuador in the opening round of the tournament.
