Ben Wallace released from felony charge of carrying a concealed firearm: NBA News
Detroit Pistons veteran power forward Ben Wallace, who was alleged with drunken driving and carrying a concealed firearm in his car, was released from the gun charge by the prosecutors earlier this week. The verdict from the court
came after the NBA superstar pleaded guilty on both the charges under the influence of alcohol. Wallace made no comment after the legal proceedings except acknowledging his fault.
The fact that the 37-year-old Wallace has no prior criminal record and he was carrying a gun in his backpack unknowingly, which was registered under his wife’s name, pushed the legal authorities to drop the gun charges.
However the charges for drunken driving are still in place and the NBA players is expected to serve punishment for that. Upon examination, the blood-alcohol level of Ben Wallace was observed 0.14 percent which is almost double
the legit limit of the Michigan State.
The Assistant Prosecutor of Wallace’s case Robert Novy explained that the plea deal was also made taking into consideration Wallace’s behaviour when his Cadillac Escalade was pulled over by Oakland County’s Bloomfield Township
Police on 24th September. Ben cooperated with the police at that time and didn’t show any signs of remonstration.
Ben is scheduled to return at Judge Shalina Kumar’s court on 13th December to move further with the case. The maximum penalty in Wallace’s case is 93 days in jail. However, defence attorney Steve Fishman said that his
client is guilty of putting himself in such a situation and expects probation and community services as punishment.
"He's certainly not happy he got himself in that situation. I can't imagine Judge Kumar would send him to jail. ... The police treated him fairly. The prosecutor treated him fairly. We're confident the judge will treat him fairly,"
Fishman said.
Ben Wallace is in the final stages of the NBA career and might play a couple of more seasons before announcing his retirement. Four-Time NBA Defensive player of the Year Ben has played with five different NBA teams during his career
which include Washington Wizards, Orlando Magic, Detroit Pistons, Chicago Bulls and Cleveland Cavaliers.
Throughout his NBA career, Ben Wallace has never been a part of any major controversy on and off the court and has always been a composed person. Wallace has made two NBA Final appearances in 2004 and 2005 and won an NBA title
in 2004.
In the last seasons, Wallace became the 34th player in the history of the league to reach a mark of 10,000 rebounds and 95th player to play more than 1000 games. At the Twilight of his career, Ben Wallace
is hoping that he is not sent to jail for drunken driving case and do community service instead.
