Ben Zobrist helps Tampa Bay Rays overcome mighty Texas Rangers 3-1 - MLB Update
Ben Zobrist smacked a home-run in the extra inning as Tampa Bay Rays edged the Texas Rangers 3-1 at Tropicana Field in St. Petersburg, Florida on Friday, September 7 in the opening game of their three match series.
"I've never had a walk-off home run before in my life, regardless of whether it was Little League or high school or college," Zobrist said. "I thought about if it was ever going to happen, but when you're in the moment you just try to have a good, quality
at bat."
"That may be the first time in Major League Baseball history that happens, where the wife sings the national anthem and the husband hits a walk-off homer," Maddon observed. "Maybe Honus Wagner and his wife, back in the day. Whenever amplification came on
board, you'd have to check that out."
Throughout this season, other American League teams have found it extremely tough to beat the Rays at their home ballpark. It seems Manager Joe Maddon has a perfect winning formula to win games at Tropicana Field.
Rays dominated their opponents in all aspects of the game on Friday evening to secure a much needed win. Without a shadow of a doubt, they are not going to back down in the AL East pennant race. It will be interesting to see if Maddon and company can extend
their winning streak to improve their chances of making it to the playoffs.
Rays’ starting pitcher Jeremy Hellickson pitched with great control and accuracy to play a key role in deciding the outcome of the clash. In his six innings of start, Hellickson gave up just four hits and a run, laying the foundations of an impressive Rays’
victory.
However, it was the relief pitcher Wade Davis who was awarded with the win after he gave up just a hit in two innings of relief to ensure his side reaches home safely.
Evan Longoria provide his side with a kind of start they were hoping for as he connected for a solo home-run to left in the fourth inning to break the deadlock. Ben Zobrist delivered the tie breaking home-run in the eleventh inning to cheer up Tampa Bays’
fans.
