Bene Mayr lands the first forward double misty 1080 during Nothing Else Matters shoot
German professional skier Bene Mayr created history on Thursday, May 12, 2011 by landing the first-ever forward double misty 1080.
He threw down the trick during a shoot for his latest ski film, “Nothing Else Matters” with the Legs of Steel, a ski film crew comprising of like-minded friends including Mayr, on the Kaunertaler Glacier in Austria.
While talking about the new trick, the 22-year-old German said, “It's a new double rotation which has never been done before. I've been wanting to do this trick for over a year now and never got a chance. Now that I've finally done it I'm really happy about it.”
The German ski champion, who is still nagged by a knee injury that he sustained while competing at the Red Bull Linecatcher backcountry freestyle competition in France in March 2011, said that the jump, built as the semi-roller step down, was around 24-25 meters. After looking at the footage, he judged that the jump had given him an airtime of three seconds.
The forward double misty 1080 differs from a cork. While the skier flips backward into the jump while performing a cork, the misty involves the skier throwing a flip forward off the jump, putting the head down first. The Munich-based skier said that he sees more commitment in throwing the trick against the jump rather than the other way.
The Legs of Steel member and Myer’s roommate, Paddy Graham was also present at the site to witness the spectacular trick. Graham took the honour of giving the trick its name ‘Trooper.’
“He came up to me and was like, 'Oh, you just landed the Trooper,” Mayr said. “So that's where the name comes from -- I think it's from an Iron Maiden song.”
The Legs of Steel is currently working on their latest project “Nothing Else Matters” which is also a name of a song by heavy metal band Metallica. The name comes as no surprise as the main crew members, who include Mayr, Graham, Thomas Hlawitschka, Tobi Reindl and filmer Andre Nutini are equally passionate about rock and roll music along with freeskiing and filming.
The Legs of Steel crew and the accompanying European freeskiers are in Kaunertaler Glacier for a 10-day shoot for the latest film which is scheduled to be released exclusively online this fall.
